Important update – Bradford Teaching Hospitals and COVID-19

Some non-urgent surgery and outpatient appointments suspended

Bradford Teaching Hospitals has announced they will suspend some non-urgent surgery and outpatient appointments for two weeks from today (Tuesday 20 October 2020) after a rise in the number of seriously unwell COVID-19 patients.

Over the last few days, Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) has seen admissions rise to around 100 COVID patients, with up to 30 patients requiring oxygen support via non-invasive ventilation (CPAP). This is the single highest figure of patients on CPAP of any hospital in the Yorkshire and North East region. The hospital also has an increased number of patients in intensive care on ventilation.

It is not a decision they have taken lightly, but they need to create as much bed capacity and free up clinical staff within their hospitals to help them manage this surge in COVID-19 patients.

Patients with life-threatening, emergency illnesses should still attend the A&E department at Bradford Royal Infirmary, and the Trust will continue to care for those people who are receiving treatment for cancer and many other conditions. Clinicians are urgently reviewing their patient lists to ensure they can still treat those people in greatest clinical need. Patients affected will be contacted by the relevant hospital department in the coming days.

The Trust are also continuing to work with neighbouring private hospitals like the Yorkshire Clinic to enable them to keep providing surgery and clinical investigations to those patients with urgent needs.

Please note that the Trust is still accepting urgent and routine referrals from GP practices.

We appreciate that this may be difficult for many patients, who have been waiting on lists throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. But this action is needed to keep our hospitals safe for everyone while we deal with the worst effects of this virus. Should your patients in general practice have any questions at this time, we ask that they contact the department stated on their last hospital letter.
